Important: this example assumes 2,000 sq ft is the actual measured roof surface, not the home's living area or flat footprint.
Roofing Square Calculator: Squares, Shingle Bundles & Waste
Convert measured roof square footage into roofing squares, add a waste allowance and estimate shingle bundles. For a measured 2,000 sq ft roof, the starting quantity is 20 roofing squares before waste.
Your project details
Change the inputs below to match your project.
For final whole-package rounding and a separate starter/ridge takeoff, follow the worked shingle quantity and accessory-order guide. If a label states coverage per bundle, enter bundles per square as 100 divided by that coverage; for a hypothetical 32 sq ft bundle, enter 3.125.
Roofing square calculator formula
A roofing square is a roofing-industry quantity equal to 100 square feet of roof surface. To convert measured roof area to roofing squares, divide the roof surface area by 100. Then add a project-specific waste allowance and multiply by the exact number of bundles required per square for your shingle product.
Base roofing squares = roof surface area ÷ 100
Squares including waste = base squares × waste factor
Approximate bundles = squares including waste × bundles per square
Need to audit a contractor quantity first? Read how measured area, waste and whole bundles should stay separate, then return here with the product coverage from the label or specification.
How many roofing squares for a 2,000 sq ft roof?
If 2,000 sq ft is the actual roof surface area, the math is direct: 2,000 ÷ 100 = 20 roofing squares before waste. With a 10% allowance, 20 × 1.10 = 22 roofing squares for planning.
This distinction matters because a 2,000 sq ft house is not automatically a 2,000 sq ft roof. A one-story home, a two-story home, a home with a large garage and a steep roof can all have very different roof surface areas even when their living areas are the same. If you only know the footprint and slope, use the Roof Pitch Calculator first.
How many bundles of shingles for a 2,000 sq ft roof?
If the selected asphalt shingle product states that it takes 3 bundles to cover one roofing square, a 20-square roof uses about 60 field-shingle bundles before waste. With a 10% planning allowance, 22 squares × 3 bundles = approximately 66 bundles.
Do not treat 3 bundles per square as a universal rule. Designer, premium and specialty shingles can have different package sizes and coverage. The calculator intentionally lets you change the bundles per square input so the estimate can match the manufacturer's current package specification.
Roof square footage to roofing squares and bundles
The table below answers common searches such as “how many roofing squares for 1,500 sq ft,” “how many bundles for a 2,500 sq ft roof” and “how many shingles for a 3,000 sq ft roof.” It assumes the number shown is measured roof surface area, not house living area. The bundle examples use 3 bundles per square.
| Measured roof area | Base roofing squares | Bundles before waste* | Squares with 10% waste | Bundles with 10% waste* |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1,000 sq ft | 10 | 30 | 11 | 33 |
| 1,200 sq ft | 12 | 36 | 13.2 | 40 |
| 1,500 sq ft | 15 | 45 | 16.5 | 50 |
| 1,800 sq ft | 18 | 54 | 19.8 | 60 |
| 2,000 sq ft | 20 | 60 | 22 | 66 |
| 2,200 sq ft | 22 | 66 | 24.2 | 73 |
| 2,500 sq ft | 25 | 75 | 27.5 | 83 |
| 3,000 sq ft | 30 | 90 | 33 | 99 |
| 3,500 sq ft | 35 | 105 | 38.5 | 116 |

Square feet to roofing squares: quick conversion
To convert any known roof surface area to squares, divide by 100. A 1,750 sq ft roof is 17.5 squares. A 2,640 sq ft roof is 26.4 squares. A 3,250 sq ft roof is 32.5 squares. The calculator does this automatically and keeps the base quantity separate from the waste-adjusted quantity.
Roofing squares to square feet
You can also reverse the calculation. Multiply roofing squares by 100 to get roof surface area. For example, 18 squares = 1,800 sq ft, 25 squares = 2,500 sq ft, and 30 squares = 3,000 sq ft of roof surface before any ordering allowance.
Roof area vs. house square footage vs. footprint
These three measurements are commonly confused:
- Living area: finished interior floor area. It may be spread across one, two or more stories.
- Building footprint: the horizontal area the building occupies on the ground.
- Roof surface area: the actual sloped surface covered by roofing material.
A two-story 2,000 sq ft home might have roughly half the conditioned footprint of a one-story 2,000 sq ft home. Roof pitch, eaves, garages, porches, additions and irregular geometry then change the final roof surface. This is why a search for “roofing squares for a 2,000 sq ft house” cannot be answered accurately from living area alone.
How roof pitch changes roofing square footage
If you start with a flat horizontal footprint, the sloped roof surface is larger. A pitch multiplier converts the horizontal plan area into an approximate sloped area for simple roof geometry. For example, a 6:12 roof has a surface multiplier of about 1.118, while a 12:12 roof is about 1.414.
| Roof pitch | Approx. surface multiplier | 2,000 sq ft footprint becomes* |
|---|---|---|
| Flat / 0:12 | 1.000 | 2,000 sq ft |
| 4:12 | 1.054 | 2,108 sq ft |
| 6:12 | 1.118 | 2,236 sq ft |
| 8:12 | 1.202 | 2,404 sq ft |
| 10:12 | 1.302 | 2,604 sq ft |
| 12:12 | 1.414 | 2,828 sq ft |
*Simple geometry illustration before overhangs, attached roofed areas and waste. Complex roofs should be measured by planes or from a reliable measurement report.
For slope math and a custom rise/run input, use the dedicated roof pitch calculator.
How much roofing waste should I add?
Waste is material added above measured roof area for cuts, layout and roof geometry. It should not be treated as one automatic number for every project. A simple roof with long uninterrupted planes can differ from a roof with many hips, valleys, dormers and penetrations.
| Planning scenario | Common test range | Why it can vary |
|---|---|---|
| Simple geometry | 5%–10% | Fewer cuts and intersections |
| Moderate complexity | 10%–15% | Hips, valleys, penetrations and layout |
| Complex / cut-up roof | 15%+ | More cuts, transitions and material loss |
These are planning scenarios, not ordering instructions. Final waste should reflect the exact roof, shingle dimensions, installation layout and installer or supplier takeoff.
How many bundles are in one roofing square?
Many common asphalt shingle products are packaged at around 3 bundles per roofing square, which is why that value is the calculator default. But “3 bundles = 1 square” is not universal. Some products need more packages to cover the same 100 sq ft. Use the manufacturer's stated coverage, then enter the corresponding bundles-per-square value above.
What a shingle bundle calculator should include
A useful shingles calculator should show the assumptions instead of producing one unexplained number. This tool separates:
- Measured roof area in square feet
- Base roofing squares
- Waste allowance
- Squares including waste
- Bundles per roofing square
- Approximate whole bundles to plan for
That separation makes it easier to compare your calculation with a contractor takeoff or supplier estimate and identify why two quantities differ.
Starter shingles, ridge cap and underlayment are separate
The bundle number above is a field-shingle quantity. A complete roof system can also require starter strips, ridge and hip cap shingles, underlayment, leak-barrier products where required, drip edge, flashing, fasteners and ventilation components. These products often use different coverage units, so do not assume they are included in the field-shingle bundle total.
How to measure a roof before using the calculator
- Use measured roof surface area when available. A roof measurement report or contractor takeoff can already include slope.
- If starting from a footprint, account for pitch. Convert the horizontal plan to sloped surface before dividing by 100.
- Include all roofed sections. Garages, porches, additions and separate planes can add area.
- Keep waste separate. First calculate physical roof area, then add the ordering allowance.
- Verify package coverage. Match the bundle calculation to the exact shingle product.
Worked examples
Example 1: 1,500 sq ft measured roof
1,500 ÷ 100 = 15 base squares. At 10% waste, 15 × 1.10 = 16.5 squares. At 3 bundles per square, 16.5 × 3 = 49.5, so the planning result rounds to approximately 50 whole bundles.
Example 2: 2,000 sq ft measured roof
2,000 ÷ 100 = 20 base squares. At 10% waste, the quantity becomes 22 squares. At 3 bundles per square, the estimate is approximately 66 bundles.
Example 3: 2,500 sq ft measured roof
2,500 ÷ 100 = 25 base squares. At 10% waste, the quantity becomes 27.5 squares. At 3 bundles per square, the calculator rounds 82.5 to approximately 83 whole bundles.
Example 4: 3,000 sq ft measured roof
3,000 ÷ 100 = 30 base squares. With 10% waste, the quantity becomes 33 squares. At 3 bundles per square, that is approximately 99 bundles.
Using roofing squares for cost planning
Once you know approximate roof quantity, you can build a broader replacement budget. Roofing squares alone do not determine final project price because material type, pitch, access, tear-off layers, decking repair, flashing, ventilation, permits and local labor can materially change a quote. Use the Roof Replacement Cost Calculator after the quantity step, then compare bids with the Contractor Quote Comparison tool.

Roofing square calculator FAQ
How many roofing squares are in a 2,000 sq ft roof?
If 2,000 sq ft is the measured roof surface, it equals 20 roofing squares before waste.
How many bundles of shingles do I need for a 2,000 sq ft roof?
If the product uses 3 bundles per square, 20 squares is about 60 bundles before waste. With a 10% planning allowance, 22 squares is about 66 bundles.
How many square feet are in a roofing square?
One roofing square equals exactly 100 square feet of roof surface.
How do I convert square feet to roofing squares?
Divide actual roof surface area by 100. For example, 2,700 sq ft ÷ 100 = 27 roofing squares before waste.
How do I convert roofing squares to square feet?
Multiply squares by 100. For example, 24 roofing squares equals 2,400 sq ft of roof surface.
How many bundles are in a square of shingles?
Three bundles is common for many asphalt shingle products, but package coverage varies. Always verify the exact product label or manufacturer documentation.
Is a 2,000 sq ft house a 20-square roof?
Not necessarily. Twenty squares means 2,000 sq ft of roof surface. House living area can be very different from roof area because of story count, pitch, overhangs and attached roofed sections.
Does roof pitch change the number of squares?
Yes, if you are starting from a flat footprint. A steeper slope has more surface area than the horizontal area beneath it.
Should I always add 10% waste?
No. Ten percent is a common planning scenario, not a universal rule. Waste depends on roof geometry, product dimensions and layout.
Does the bundle total include ridge cap and starter shingles?
No. The calculator estimates field-shingle bundles. Starter, ridge/hip cap, underlayment and other components should be planned separately.
