Why tons and cubic yards are different
Cubic yards measure volume. Tons measure weight. The conversion depends on stone type, particle size, moisture and supplier grading, so a tons-per-yard factor is always an approximation.

How deep should gravel be?

Confirm the supplier conversion
After calculating, ask your supplier how many tons they recommend for the calculated cubic-yard volume. Their product-specific bulk density should be more accurate than a generic factor.
