Quick answer: convert both measurements to feet, then multiply length by width. A 12 ft by 14 ft rectangular floor is 168 square feet. For an irregular space, divide it into non-overlapping shapes, calculate each area and add them. Subtract only areas excluded by the actual installation plan. Add material allowances and package rounding afterward, not while measuring.
Use the square-footage calculator for each rectangle, square or circle and keep a sketch beside the results. The calculator's circle input is diameter, not radius. This guide covers project takeoffs for homeowners; it does not establish appraisal living area, a property boundary, roof surface area or a permitted building area.
Convert feet and inches before multiplying
Decimal feet = whole feet + inches ÷ 12. Twelve feet six inches is 12.5 ft, not 12.6 ft. Ten feet three inches is 10.25 ft. Their rectangular area is 12.5 × 10.25 = 128.125 sq ft, or about 128.13 sq ft when displayed to two decimals. Keep the unrounded measurements in your worksheet.
If both dimensions are measured entirely in inches, multiply them and divide by 144. A 150-inch by 123-inch space gives 18,450 square inches ÷ 144 = the same 128.125 sq ft. Dividing by 12 only converts a length; area requires the squared conversion. If using meters, multiply square meters by approximately 10.7639 to get square feet. Do not multiply one dimension in feet by another in meters.
Choose the formula that matches the shape
| Shape | Formula in feet | Worked area |
|---|---|---|
| Rectangle | Length × width | 20 × 15 = 300 sq ft |
| Square | Side × side | 12 × 12 = 144 sq ft |
| Triangle | Base × perpendicular height ÷ 2 | 10 × 8 ÷ 2 = 40 sq ft |
| Circle | π × radius², or π × (diameter ÷ 2)² | 12 ft diameter gives about 113.10 sq ft |
| Trapezoid | (Parallel side A + parallel side B) × perpendicular height ÷ 2 | (8 + 12) × 6 ÷ 2 = 60 sq ft |
Perpendicular height is the shortest distance between the base and the opposite point or parallel side; it is not a sloping edge. A circle's radius is half its diameter. Using a 12 ft diameter as a 12 ft radius would produce four times the correct area.
Measure an L-shaped room without counting overlap twice
Sketch the room and draw a line that splits it into separate rectangles. In this example, the main area is 14 × 12 ft and a non-overlapping extension is 6 × 4 ft. An alternative check is a 20 × 12 ft bounding rectangle with a 6 × 8 ft missing corner. Both methods should agree.
| Method | Calculation | Total |
|---|---|---|
| Separate rectangles | (14 × 12) + (6 × 4) = 168 + 24 | 192 sq ft |
| Outer rectangle minus missing corner | (20 × 12) − (6 × 8) = 240 − 48 | 192 sq ft |
Do not multiply the full length of both arms and add them if those rectangles overlap at the corner. Mark each zone on the sketch with its dimensions and subtotal. Add closets, alcoves and connected halls only when they receive the same material; record other rooms separately so the supplier can check the takeoff.
Keep measured area, allowance and purchase quantity separate
Suppose the L-shaped room has 192 sq ft of measured floor and the installation plan excludes a permanent 3 × 4 ft cabinet footprint. Net installed area is 192 − 12 = 180 sq ft. If the installer specifies an illustrative 8% cut allowance, the material target is 180 × 1.08 = 194.4 sq ft. This percentage is a scenario, not a universal recommendation.
With cartons covering 23.5 sq ft each, 194.4 ÷ 23.5 = about 8.27 cartons; round up to 9 cartons, providing 211.5 sq ft. The carton-rounding surplus is already in that order; do not apply another waste percentage to it. Keep a separately requested repair carton visible as a separate line. Use the flooring quantity and cost calculator after the measured and excluded areas are agreed.
Whether flooring goes under cabinets depends on the product and installation system. Confirm the manufacturer's instructions and installer scope rather than subtracting all cabinets automatically. Tile pattern, plank direction, narrow rooms and product lengths can change cuts even when two rooms have identical square footage.
Floor area is not wall area or material volume
A 12 × 14 ft room has 168 sq ft of floor. With an 8 ft wall height, rectangular wall area before openings is 2 × (12 + 14) × 8 = 416 sq ft. One 3 × 7 ft door and two 3 × 4 ft windows subtract 45 sq ft, leaving 371 sq ft of geometric wall area. This excludes trim, ceiling, slopes and additional coats.
The paint calculator turns wall area into a coating quantity using coverage and coats. Floor area alone cannot tell you gallons. Likewise, concrete and landscaping materials need depth: 180 sq ft at 4 inches is 180 × 4 ÷ 324 = about 2.22 cubic yards before allowances. The cubic-yard calculator handles that volume step. Square footage is two-dimensional; cubic footage is three-dimensional.
Conversions and rounding
- Square inches to square feet: divide by 144.
- Square feet to square yards: divide by 9.
- Square feet to acres: divide by 43,560.
- Square feet to square meters: multiply by 0.09290304.
Round a displayed subtotal only for readability; retain practical measurement precision until the final order. At 180 sq ft, the area is 20 square yards or about 16.72 square meters. A measured 17.9 ft should not become 18 ft solely because the tool is easier to use with whole numbers. Recheck critical boundaries and out-of-square rooms before treating a sketch as an order.
A field checklist before buying
- Write the material and the surfaces it will cover.
- Draw each room, opening and excluded footprint.
- Record feet and inches clearly, then convert to one unit.
- Split irregular shapes into non-overlapping zones.
- Check the sum using a second method where practical.
- Confirm exclusions with the installer and product instructions.
- Apply a stated allowance, then round to supplier packages.
- Save the sketch and assumptions in the free home project planning workbook and revisit them when the layout changes.
Project and regional limits
Interior finish measurements differ from exterior building measurements used in some listings or appraisal standards. Do not reuse this takeoff as certified living area. Sloped ceilings, stair openings, shared walls and local rules can require different treatment for permits, valuation or insurance. Obtain the applicable professional measurement when that purpose matters. For outdoor work, setbacks, drainage and property boundaries require separate verification.
Measure safely from an accessible surface. This guide does not require climbing onto a roof or entering an unsafe space. Confirm concealed damage and installation suitability with a qualified contractor; an accurate area cannot establish structural capacity, moisture condition or code compliance.
Frequently asked questions
How many square feet is a 12 by 12 room?
A rectangular floor measuring 12 ft by 12 ft is 144 sq ft before exclusions or material allowances.
How do I convert feet and inches to square feet?
Convert each length to decimal feet using feet plus inches divided by 12, then multiply. If both dimensions are in inches, multiply and divide by 144.
Do I include closets and cabinets?
Include closets receiving the same finish. Subtract cabinet footprints only when the product instructions and installation plan exclude flooring under them.
How do I measure an irregular room?
Split it into non-overlapping rectangles, triangles or other simple shapes and add their areas. A bounding rectangle minus missing areas provides a useful cross-check.
Is wall square footage the same as floor square footage?
No. Wall area uses wall lengths and height, with documented opening deductions. Floor area uses plan dimensions; neither includes paint coats or material waste by itself.
