A 2,000 sq ft house does not translate into a fixed number of gallons because the 2,000 sq ft usually describes floor area, not paintable wall area. A compact two-story home, an open-plan ranch and a house with many interior partitions can all have the same floor area and very different wall quantities.
Build the estimate room by room
For each rectangular room, calculate perimeter × wall height. Then subtract large openings if that matches your estimating method. Add all rooms together before applying coat count and the selected product's coverage.
Worked example for one room
A 14 × 12 ft bedroom with 8 ft walls has a perimeter of 52 ft. Gross wall area is 52 × 8 = 416 sq ft. If one door and two windows total about 51 sq ft, net wall area is roughly 365 sq ft. Two coats create about 730 sq ft of coverage demand.
Why multiplying 2,000 by a rule-of-thumb factor is weak
It hides the things that actually change quantity: story count, room layout, ceiling height, open-to-below spaces, large windows, closets and the number of coats. A room schedule takes more time, but it produces a number you can audit.
Keep the paint systems separate
| Surface | Measure separately because… |
|---|---|
| Walls | Main area varies by room layout and height |
| Ceilings | Uses floor/ceiling area and often a different product |
| Baseboards / casing | Measured by linear feet, not wall area |
| Doors | Count and face area matter; finish may differ |
| Primer | Needed only where substrate/color conditions call for it |
Coverage should come from the paint you are buying
Do not assume every gallon covers the same area. Texture, porosity, color change and application method can affect practical coverage. Use the manufacturer's current label or technical data as the input in the Paint Calculator.
Example whole-house workflow
- Create a room list.
- Measure perimeter and wall height for each room.
- Subtract major openings consistently.
- Add wall areas.
- Multiply by coat count.
- Divide by product coverage.
- Round to actual container sizes.
- Calculate ceilings, trim, doors and primer separately.
Do not forget the paint you may want later
Keeping a small labeled amount from the final batch can help with future touch-ups. Record brand, product line, sheen, color name/code and tint formula so a future match is easier.
Older-home safety
If preparation will disturb painted surfaces in pre-1978 housing, review applicable lead-safe renovation requirements before sanding, scraping or demolition.
