Use area and depth

Do not confuse inches and feet
Depth is often measured in inches while landscape dimensions are measured in feet. Converting the units correctly is essential before calculating cubic volume.
Round for real-world beds
Curved borders, slopes, plant roots and uneven ground make perfect precision unrealistic. Bulk suppliers may also sell in half-yard or full-yard increments, so the practical order quantity may need to be rounded up.
Check delivery fees
The cheapest price per cubic yard is not always the cheapest delivered price. Ask about minimum orders, delivery radius, dump location restrictions and additional fees before ordering.
Measure separate beds, then combine them
For irregular landscaping, break the yard into simple rectangles or approximate shapes, total their square footage and then calculate the combined volume. This is usually easier than trying to measure the entire yard as one shape.
